Review Summary and Plot Commentary about SherryBaby
Sherry Swanson (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is fresh out of prison, having served three years for a robbery to feed a heroin addiction. As part of her parole, Sherry must live in a halfway house, secure a job and submit to drug tests each time she visits her parole officer (Giancarlo Esposito). More than anything, Sherry is eager to reestablish a relationship with her young daughter Alexis (Ryan Simpkins), who's been living with Sherry's brother Bobby (Brad William Henke) and Bobby's wife Lynette (Bridget Barkan) for the past three years. Sherry's first reunion with Alexis is tearful yet happy, with Sherry heaping presents on her daughter and Alexis giggling and calling Sherry “Mommy”. Sherry is delighted to be back in her daughter's life, but begins to fret when Alexis can never come to the phone anytime Sherry calls the house.

To get an extra edge in getting to know her daughter again, Sherry seduces her way into employment at a daycare center. While she now has her dream job, Sherry is frustrated with the tension-filled and restricted life at the halfway house.   She flees the house one night and camps out on her brother's porch. Lynette is not too happy when she finds Sherry in the morning, but Bobby welcomes his sister, stating she can stay only if she keeps her nose clean. She is overjoyed to be with Alexis, but is dismayed that the little girl is now addressing her as “Sherry”. Sherry is envious by the close relationship that Lynette and Alexis share. Tempers and jealousies soon flare and Bobby drives Sherry to a motel, claiming that the house is too crowded for all of them to live comfortably. Heartbroken and angry, Sherry reaches out to tough looking but kindhearted Dean Walker (Danny Trejo), a man she recently met at a twelve-step meeting.
