| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Joe the King |
Joe the King is an often miserable teenage boy who lives in a dysfunctional yet "nuclear" family. His father is an abusive drunk who works as a janitor at Joe's school. Joe's relationship with his father is toxic as best, as he battles to keep his family out of debt and to make his mother happy. Joe's mother is overworked, underappreciated and abused by her husband, who can be particularly cruel. In turn, she doesn't have much kindness to bestow on Joe or his older brother, who is growing less close to Joe. Joe has one friend, an amoral nerd who comes from a similarly dysfunctional family. Few people genuinely care about Joe, but Joe never stops caring about his family. He turns to stealing to help his family, but this only leads to further trouble. One gets the feeling that Joe's parents have dealt with their own disappointments and are extremely unhappy people. Yet Joe remains the nucleus of a troubled family, even if only he is aware of it.
