An Arab man is exiled from his country for having an affair with the Sultan's wife. He meets a group of 12 vikings who tell him they need 13 men to battle creatures. He joins and becomes the 13th warrior. They head off and begin a battle with these creatures.

This is the story of Ahmed ibn Fadlan, a selfish young Arab poet living in Baghdad in the Middle Ages. After having an affair with the wife of a prominent citizen, he is banished, undertaking a diplomatic mission for the caliph. He meets a group of Vikings, and is forced to join them as a mercenary fighting a group of mysterious cannibals.
