| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Mulan |
This movie is the Disney version of an ancient Chinese fable. Fa Mulan is a tomboyish and strong young woman who is unable to fit into the role of a good and obedient wife which is impressed upon her by rules of a chauvinistic society. When the Huns cross the Great Wall to invade China and men are drafted from households across China, Mulan sneaks off as a man (with a helpful Cricket and comedic dragon, Mushu) to join the Chinese army in place of her injured father. The rag-tag group of recruits is hurriedly conditioned and led bravely into battle against the Huns by Captain Shang. In the ensuing war, Mulan fights for the safety of her homeland, her family's honor, and to prove that one man (in this case a girlie man) can make all the difference.

After Mulan refuses to honor her family traditions, she finds herself having to defend herself against her enemies. So she steals her father's armor and joins the Chinese military. While the story of Mulan is not as well-known as that of Pocahontas, it's still told brilliantly in this Disney-animated film.
