| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Lola (1981) |
LOLA is a movie cowritten and directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder in 1981. Armin Mueller-Stahl and Barbara Sukowa won the 1982 German Academy Awards in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories.
The setting is Koburg, Germany in the mid-fifties. Von Bohm has just been hired by the Mayor as the man in charge of granting the construction licences. Von Bohm is a pragmatic man who knows he has to deal with crooks like the contractor Schukert if he wants the things to be done. Schukert's mistress, Lola, is a singer working in the local brothel. Intrigued by Von Bohm's reputation as an honest man, she decides to seduce him. Von Bohm, unaware of Lola's real identity, falls in love with the prostitute and wants to marry her. When he finally discovers her night job, Von Bohm begins a personal war against Schukert in order to expose the crook's schemes and ruin him.
