Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Hondo
An army dispatch rider, Hondo Lane, encounters a woman, Angie Lowe and her son, Johnny, living alone in hostile Apache country and he becomes their protector.
The Apaches, under their chief, Vittorio, have left Angie and Johnny alone due to the fact that they hold young sons in high regard, but they inform Angie that she shouldn't be alone and she'll be forced to marry one of the braves, even though she claims that her husband will be home soon.
Angie's husband tries to shoot Hondo in the back so Hondo is forced to kill him, not knowing who he is.
Hondo is captured by Vittorio's men, but to spare his life Angie claims that he is her husband and Hondo goes along with him.
Hondo moves in with Angie and they fall in love.
One day the army shows up and explains that after checking on another family they'd be back to escort Hondo, Angie and Johnny to a safer place. The army returns a short time later battered and wounded.
With Vittorio killed in the battle it buys them some time.
The army escorts them away. Along the way, another group of Indians attacks them. They're able to fight off the Indians and kill their chief. Without a chief the Indians retreat and the army and the family are safe.

The main character, Hondo Lane, is a scout for the US cavalry. He comes across a ranch in hostile Indian territory, where a deserted woman and her boy live. They would not follow him to safety, but stay at their place and befriend the Indian chief. Hondo, back in the fort, turns back to save the woman and the boy - he has grown fond of both. He meets the woman's scoundrel husband and eventually has to kill him. The Indian Chief captures Hondo, takes him for the killed husband and allows him to live with his family.
In a riot the Indian Chief is killed, his successor wages war against the whites; Hondo kills him too and takes woman and boy to his farm in California.

This was originally filmed in 3D and thus featuring some quirky camera angles. Considering the time of making, the relations between scout and farm wife and scout and Indian chief show a considerable depth.
