Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Rules of the Game
THE RULES OF THE GAME (La Règle du Jeu) is a movie written and directed by Jean Renoir in 1938.
Christine and Robert de la Cheyniest have invited their friends to their superb country home for a week-end of hunting and pleasure. André Jurieux, who's France's hero of the day for having crossed the Atlantic without a single stop in his plane, is the guest of honor of the week-end. Jurieux is madly in love with Christine and has planned to convince her to leave her husband Robert.
Robert's mistress, Geneviève, is also one of the guests of the De La Cheyniest. This peculiar situation doesn't shock anybody at all and even the servants begin to imitate the frivolity of their masters. But, while cheating is only a game for the high society, it turns quickly into tragedy when more uncultivated people are concerned.
