Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Summertime
Jane Hudson is an unmarried secretary who has finally saved up enough money to take a vacation in Venice. She's not a young woman anymore and when she arrives at Venice, a city that she's immediately fascinated with, she secretly hopes that she'll find some romance for herself. Everyone she befriends seems to be married or engaged in some kind of torrid affair; it makes her feel all the more lonely and despondent.

One day Jane meets a handsome shopkeeper, and the attraction is mutual and instantaneous. Jane doesn't fully trust him though. First she discovers that he lied to her about the age and value of an item that she purchased from his antique shop; next, and worst, she learns that he's married and hasn't bothered to tell her. He is charismatic however, and persistent, and soon Jane is willing to be seduced into living out a romantic fantasy, the first passionate love affair she has ever had, and likely the last one she will ever have.
