Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Rob Roy
Rob Roy is a farmer and clan leader in 18th century Scotland, who borrows money from the evil Marquis of Montrose. As a friend of Roy's is transporting the money, he is robbed and murdered by the Marquis' henchman, Archie Cunningham. When Roy informs the Marquis that the money is gone, the Marquis offers to forgive the debt if Roy will bear false witness against a rival aristocrat. As a matter of honor, Roy refuses and takes to the hills. The Marquis' men burn Roy's farm, and Cunningham rapes Roy's wife, possibly impregnating her. She tries to keep the rape a secret, knowing that otherwise her husband will probably be killed seeking revenge. However, Roy finds out, and challenges Cunningham to a duel to the death, even though Cunningham is a master swordsman and he has little chance of winning.
