| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Sahara (2005) |
Dirk Pitt (McConaughey) and Al Giordino (Zahn) are marine treasure hunters; friends since childhood and ex-Navy SEAL. Pitt fantasizes about a lost Civil War ship that he thinks sailed into the deserts of western Africa and everyone thinks he is crazy until he finds a gold coin from the ship.
Pitt and Giordino lead a small team in search of the ship and offer a ride to a doctor (Cruz) who happens to be searching for a "plague" in the same area.
In Mali the threesome uncover a plot by the evil Mali dictator who is poisoning the local tribes as he buries hazardous waste in the desert. Pitt realizes that the waste is following a system of underground rivers and that same river could have been used by the Civil War ship to travel into Africa. The three decide to battle the dictator and stop the hazardous waste dump and notify international relief agencies. Along the way they battle the evil army in a jetboat gun fight and capture the waste site. Of course, Pitt is right and the ship he seeks is also buried right outside of the dump and they use its ironclad hull to hide from the army until they are rescued by local tribesmen.
