| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Fear and Trembling |
FEAR AND TREMBLING (Stupeur et tremblements) was based on Amélie Nothomb novel and directed by Alain Corneau in 2002. Sylvie Testud earned for this movie the 2004 French Academy award in the Best Actress category.
Amélie spent her first years in Japan and returned then to Europe. After having earned an academic degree, she returns to Tokyo and is hired, with a one year contract, by the Yamamoto corporation as a translator. She is bright, fluent in the Japanese language but doesn't understand all the Japanese office culture and protocols. After a few blunders, she's assigned first to uninteresting tasks in the accounting department and finally to the cleaning of the rest rooms. Amélie knows that a Japanese won't quit his job for fear of losing face so she just hangs in waiting for the end of her contract.
