| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Prey for Rock and Roll |
Four girls played by Gina Gershon, Drea de Matteo, Shelly Cole, and Lori Petty have been playing in a rock and roll band for a long time. They still have never hit it big, just playing in bars and getting by. They have a sleazy agent who gets them gig, but nothing spectacular. Gina Gershon plays the lead singer, from whose perspective the narration is given. Gershon does much of the actual singing in the film. Gershon's character has a lesbian relationship that breaks up. She finds herself hanging out with one of the other band member's brothers, recently released from prison for killing their stepfather who sexually abused the women of the family. Meanwhile the de Matteo and Petty characters are lesbian lovers and one has the other's name tattooed on her arm to show her love. The character played by Cole is a strungout druggie who somehow gets it together long enough to perform. Just when it looks like they are finally going to get the big break, one of the band members is killed. The story is apparently based on the autobiographical play by West Coast musician Cyheri Lovedog. Lovedog was listed multiple times in the credits, so apparently was also involved in the production of the film.
