| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Second Woman |
Ellen Foster (Betsy Drake) is a conservative middle aged lady who is visiting her elderly aunt on the California coast. She is introduced to Jeff Cohalan (Robert Young) who lives in the cliff top home next door. He is a handsome, successful architect and Ellen soon finds herself with more than a slight attraction. Jeff seems to be reciprocal in feeling but appears to be withholding something very important. After questioning her aunt, Ellen discovers that Jeff's beloved fiancé died in a car crash very recently. Ellen believes this is the reason for her prospect's distance until a series of strange and deadly accidents begin to befall Jeff.
After the demise or destruction of many of Jeff's beloved things, he begins to believe he is cursed. He tries to drive Ellen away for her own protection. One evening during a moonlit walk to discuss the future, Jeff swears he has seen a figure lurking in the bushes. He and Ellen rush to the location but find nothing. Was someone there or did Jeff just imagine it? Ellen is warned that the later might be the case and is encouraged to break off relations with the unlucky fellow. Instead she becomes committed to finding the truth of the situation.
She begins to investigate coming up with several clues including a mysterious artist and painting. Does she or does she not find the truth in this mysterious thriller? Does she end up with Jeff or is he suffering from self persecution?
