Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Operation “Y”
The story takes place in the Soviet Russia. A director of a large warehouse has stolen and sold so many goods that he sees no way to cover it up and fears inspection. He decides to hire three crooks nicknamed Byvali (Evgeny Morgunov), Balbes (Yuri Nikulin), and Troos (Georgy Vitsin) to go to the warehouse and stage burglary – so that he can write off the losses.

The crooks sit down to plan it all out. First off all, they come up with a name for the operation: Operation “Y” (so that nobody can figure out what it is). Then they assign the “jobs.” Troos will take care of the guard, which shouldn't be hard since the guard is an old grandma; she's got a rifle put probably has no idea how to use it. Troos must come up to her, distract her with a question, and then bring her down with chloroform. Byvaly, the biggest and the most experienced of the three, will break the padlocks, and then together with Balbes go into the warehouse and do the job.

However, things do not go as planned. It so happens that on the night of the planned burglary, the guard's granddaughter gets sick, so the old grandma decides to stay home and asks her tenant, a student named Shurik (Aleksandr Demyanenko) to go watch the warehouse for her. That comes as a big surprise to Troos, who comes up to the supposed “grandma” from the back. Troos's nickname translates as “chicken,” and he lives up to it. When the “grandma” turns to him and he suddenly sees a young man instead, he is so terrified that he forgets the whole plan and ends up wiping his face with the chloroform-soaked handkerchief. Meanwhile, his two buddies assume that the guard is taken out and start breaking in. Shurik notices that and throws himself to defend the warehouse.
