| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Stendhal Syndrome |
THE STENDHAL SYNDROME (La Sindrome di Stendhal) was written and directed by Dario Argento in 1995.
Det. Anna Manni (Asia Argento) suffers from the Stendhal Syndrome that is rapid heartbeat, dizziness, confusion and hallucinations, brought on by an overdose of beautiful art. Now she's investigating in Florence, Italy the recent murder of a youg girl who seems to be the last victim of a violent rapist. Anna is raped by him in her hotel room and returns to Rome. She must rest and see a psychiatrist twice a week.
But Alfredo Grossi, the killer, is now obsessed by Anna and manages to kidnap her. He hides her in a cave, rapes her again and abandons her. When he comes back in the evening, Anna kills him and throws his body into the river. A few weeks later, Anna falls in love with an American art restorer. One night, she receives a phone call from Alfredo who tells her he'll soon murder her new boyfriend.
