Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Darby's Rangers
Directed by William A. Wellman in 1957. Major William Darby manages to convince the military hierarchy in Washington to let him constitute a new section in the U.S. army : The Rangers. This section would be created on the model of the well known British commandos. Darby goes then to England, search for volunteers and ends up with hundreds of soldiers eager to try their chance.
The training, carried out by an English officer in Scotland, is very hard. Many soldiers leave, exhausted, the Rangers during this period. The training often takes place during the night and under the rain. After several months of intense sparring, the Rangers are sent to North Africa for their first mission consisting in cleaning out a beach from the enemy machine-guns a few hours before the arrival of the regular army. The Rangers are then sent to Sicily, then to Italy. This new section is always way ahead of the main troops and loses a lot of soldiers during this peculiar mission. The subplots of DARBY' S RANGERS describe the love affairs of some Rangers in England and Italy with young local girls.
