Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Into the Blue
Newly unemployed diver Jared lives in the Bahamas with his girlfriend Sam. He could take low-paying scavenger work with an ex-boss friend, Bates, but would rather dive independently for any treasure-laden shipwrecks that a recent hurricane might have uncovered. He hooks up with buddy Bryce, a fun-loving egocentric lawyer with access to a beautiful boat. Jared and Sam dive with Bryce and his latest shallow girlfriend, Amanda. Near some promising relics, they find a recently-crashed plane full of cocaine and dead crew. Virtuous Sam wants to report this to the authorities. Bryce and Amanda are tempted to cash in on the coke. Jared just wants the ship's treasure, and knows he'll lose hope of a claim if others discover the site. They decide to try to identify the ship and claim its treasure first, and report the plane later.

Studying historical books, they deduce that the ship is the Zephyr, a 19th century clipper that a rich French trader lost to a pirate who ran off with the trader's daughter and sunk the ship to elude suspicion. It is worth millions - but to claim it, they must find a relic with the word "Zephyr" on it. Surfacing from one of their dives, they find men who work for Bates searching their boat. Jared goes to Bates to warn him to keep his boys away. Now, the pressure is heightened to claim the wreck before Bates can. To fund a quicker search, Bryce and Amanda secretly steal some cocaine; but the man they try to sell it to happens to be the man it belongs to in the first place. Threatening violence, he gives the four of them twelve hours to get it all back to him.

Sam, who never wanted involvement in shady dealings to begin with, tells Jared it's over, and leaves. The three remaining dive and, as they extract the cocaine, find a ship's bell labeled "Zephyr." As they haul it up, Amanda screams. She has been savaged by a shark. They drop the bell, rush her to the hospital, and miss their deadline. The goons descend upon them. While Jared surrenders to them with an offer of the more lucrative ship's treasure, Sam goes to the authorities, only to discover that they're involved, as are others she has trusted. One of them, a ruthless killer, holds Sam hostage to demand from Jared the co-ordinates to the cocaine. It is up to Jared's ingenuity to save her.
