| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Summer of Sam |
Co-written and directed by Spike Lee in 1999. The setting is the Italian district of NYC in 1977. A serial killer, known as the Son of Sam, has already killed six times. All his victims are young women with brown hair who were murdered at night in the streets of this quiet Italian neighborhood. Joey and his friends are thugs working for the local mob boss Don Luigi. They're sure that the killer lives near-at-hand and they decide to draw up a list of possible suspects. Their former friend Richie appears in the lead of the list. The English "punk" look of Richie is at this time the cause of a lot of gossips in this rather conservative neighborhood. Richie plays the guitar in a punk band and also secretly works as a male stripper and prostitute in a gay bar.
Vinny and Dionna, Joey's friends, have been married for two years now. Vinny, who's a hairdresser, cheats on his wife with his colleagues and even with her cousin. When the last two victims of Sam are found at the exact place where, the day before, he had seduced Dionna's cousin, Vinny decides to become a faithful husband from this moment on. Unfortunately, his wife learns about his infidelities and leaves him. Vinny takes refuge in alcohol and drugs and accepts, reluctantly, to guide Joey and his friends to Richie's. Richie who denies being the Son of Sam, refuses to meet Don Luigi who had agreed to help the police force to find the Son of Sam.
