Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Fifty Four
Shane O'Shea (Ryan Phillippe, “Cruel Intentions”) is a handsome teenager who lives with his strict father (Skipp Sudduth) and two younger sisters in a small, dreary New Jersey town. Just across the gleaming river, glamorous New York City temptingly beckons to young Shane. Shane spends much of his time dreaming of fame and fortune while skimming through entertainment magazines. If gorgeous Julie Black (Neve Campbell, “Scream“), hometown girl and soap opera star of television‘s “All My Children” made it, then Shane believes he can be successful, too. Armed with a fashionable new hairdo and chic clothes, Shane convinces two friends to drive into Manhattan to Studio 54, the nightclub where anyone who‘s anyone frequents. Just gaining admittance into the exclusive club is a challenge, where it is not who you know, but how you look. Eccentric, nerdy Studio 54 owner Steve Rubell (Mike Myers) quickly spies Shane and grants him entry, while his ordinary-looking friends harshly receive the boot. Shane spends the night partying with an assortment of freaks and receives a job offer from the quirky Steve Rubell.
Shane soon meets fellow busboy Greg Randazzo (Breckin Meyer, “Clueless”) and Greg's saucy wife, Anita (Salma Hayek), a coat check girl with aspirations to be a singing disco diva. The couple warmly welcomes Shane into their lives and apartment, the three of them becoming fast friends. When ambitious Shane is then offered the glamorous, much sought after position of shirtless waiter, it puts him in direct competition with Greg, who's too short to work behind the bar and unwilling to do what it takes to advance his career.
