| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Shop Around the Corner |
This delightful romantic comedy takes place in a rather thinly-depicted Hungarian town. Klara Novak (Margaret Sullivan) and Alfred Kralik (Jimmy Stewart) are among the staff of the gift shop owned by demanding, insensitive Hugo Matuschek (Frank Morgan, best known as the wizard of Oz). The two grate on each other mightily; what they don't know is that they have been carrying on an epistolary romance through the post office! Competition with other staff members supplies more comedy and plot complications. This 1940 film based on a stage play inspired the later stage musical "Boy Meets Girl" and the 1998 Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan movie "You've Got Mail."
